Biography

Kia ora! Ko Miriama Royal ahau. Ko Kirikiriroa e noho au, he uri ō Hauraki. I'm a communication designer from Aotearoa, passionate about creating interactive and engaging designs.

My design journey has been fuelled by a love for storytelling, illustrating, and an eagerness to explore how design can connect with people on a personal level. I enjoy blending cultural elements with modern design, always striving to make learning and communication more accessible and enjoyable.

After stepping away from my passion for hospitality, I returned to learning and embraced design as a new challenge. This journey has given me a fresh perspective, and my goal is to expand my cultural knowledge and bring it back to Aotearoa, deepening my understanding of Māori design and using it to uplift our communities.

Project Description

Te Pu Taka Māori is an interactive series of learning tools designed to make the Māori alphabet engaging for tamariki (children) and their whānau. The project features two books, each focusing on the vowels and consonants of Te Reo Māori, accompanied by a memory card game to reinforce learning through play. The interactive elements such as pull-tabs, flaps, and pop-ups encourage hands-on discovery, helping young learners explore Te Reo in a fun and accessible way.

Inspired by my own cultural journey, my passion for storytelling and a gap in the market of te reo based interactive books, this project aims to bring Te Reo Māori into everyday learning environments. By creating a resource that blends playful design with cultural learning, Te Pu Taka Māori helps to foster language development and cultural connection, empowering tamariki and whānau to embrace Te Reo Māori together.
